Last week, Denton County lost one of its most respected leaders when Alonzo Jamison, 93, passed away. Jamison represented Denton County as a Democrat in the Texas House of Representatives for seven terms from 1955-1967.
Alonzo Wesley Jamison, Jr. was born on April 12, 1918 in Sanger, Texas. After graduating from Denton High School, he graduated from North Texas State Teachers College in 1939 as a Government major, where he was president of the Press Club and associate editor of the Campus Chat, (Now the North Texas Daily). Later, in 1948, he would serve on the Government faculty at the school and in 1961, he was one of eight former students from the school in the Texas Legislature that led the charge to change the name to North Texas State University.
During World War II, Jamison served as a First Lieutenant in in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. He married Elisabeth McCullar on June 3, 1947, and they remained together until her passing in 2009. He was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1954 to represent District 59. He was reelected to that office six times. He headed the TWU Government department for many years afterwards.
Jamison remained a tireless contributor to Democratic causes for the rest of his life. He was a State Representative, a farmer, a journalist, and a teacher. Most importantly, he was a servant of his community and he will be sorely missed.
I’ve found it to be true that many people won’t cease to back you simply because you disagree with them on a single issue. That’s a very heartening thing. The most important thing is that the constituents have respect for their representative’s honesty, sincerity, and diligence. That’s more important than the box score on popular votes.
-Alonzo Jamison, Jr. (1918 – 2011)
