Write a Letter to the Editor Submit to a local publication

Tips for Letters to the Editor

  • Always include your name, email, full address, and phone number in the text of every letter you send.  Only your name and city will be published, but some publications will call you to verify your letter before publishing.  If they can’t reach you, it won’t be published.
  • Do not submit the same letter to more than one publication.  Aim for the publication’s audience.  Local and niche publications are just as important as major newspapers.  You have a higher likelihood of getting published in a smaller publication, so try those if you’re not having much luck.
  • Keep letters short and to the point.  200-250 words is the ideal length for most publications.
  • If you’d like to be involved in a DCDP letter writing campaign for a specific issue or candidate, please contact our Communications Chair.
  • If a publication prints your letter, Post it on our Facebook page or contact us and we’ll be sure to publicize your achievement
